Steroids in Jiu-Jitsu: Gordon Ryan’s Take and the Debate Over PEDs
The topic of performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) in jiu-jitsu has always been polarizing, but few voices are as influential (or as blunt) as Gordon Ryan’s. Known as “The King” of submission grappling, Ryan recently addressed his use of steroids, the ethics surrounding them, and the larger implications for the sport. His comments spark a broader question: Is it time for jiu-jitsu to engage in a deeper, conversation about PEDs and their role in athletic performance?
Gordon Ryan’s Perspective
Ryan has never been shy about his stance on politics and PEDs. In a recent discussion, he outlined his journey with steroids, noting that they’ve been legal in most jiu-jitsu competitions throughout his career. “Steroids are legal in jiu-jitsu, just like they’re legal in bodybuilding,” Ryan stated. “If something is legal, why wouldn’t you use it to become the best athlete you can be?”
For Ryan, PEDs aren’t about gaining an unfair advantage. They’re about achieving the peak of his athletic potential. “You don’t need steroids to be the best in the world,” he said. “But if you want to be the best version of yourself, they are a tool to help you get there.”
Ryan also dismissed the criticism that PEDs undermine his accomplishments, pointing out that he was submitting ADCC champions and medalists while competing naturally early in his career. “I’ve beaten the best guys in the world without steroids. My technical skill and work ethic have always been the foundation of my success.”
