Letting Go

It seems like Rousimar Palhares has been in the grappling community news feeds all week since his antics at the last World Series of Fighting event where he fought Jake Shields for a shot at the title. Palhares won by submission after catching Shields in a kimura. What’s got the grappling community in discussion is how long Palhares held the submission after Shields obviously tapped. Palhares has had a history of not letting go of submissions after referee stoppage. Joe Lauzon made a great video which is worth a watch analyzing some of Palhares’ fights.

Palhares has since been stripped of his title and suspended for an indefinite amount of time. It’s important to note that Palhares was also released from the UFC for the same reason.

I’ve seen this type of behavior before in MMA but never on the level of frequency as Palhares. His actions are shameful and a bad representation of the grappling community.
