Control Your Body! Don’t Let Your Body Control You!

Almost all of our actions are based on unconscious decisions.  We tend to react to situations more than act with intention.  Even our body language is getting dictated by our circumstances.  Body language is something so critical but so easily overlooked. The power and effect it has to the outside world can change the outcome of any interaction.  If you’re getting inconsistent results in competition, training, interactions, meetings, job interviews, etc. you need to create awareness for your body language.  

It’s been said and many of us have probably heard or read that communication is 70 – 93% nonverbal.  According to studies of Dr. Mehrabian in the 1960s, he found out that the interpretation of a message is 7% verbal, 38% vocal and 55% visual.  As you can see any interaction is based of nonverbal cues which is mainly body language.  Body language is also the reason how you express yourself vocally.  If you make yourself big, take up space, straight posture, chest out, and shoulders wide your vocals will be much stronger, effective, and confident which leads to a more determined message than when you make yourself small and let your body just hang.  

Life is a strategy game and by having a dominant body language you can influence your environment and even your own psychology.  

Yes, your body can influence your mind, the way your mind can influence your body.  World class athletes use this strategy all the time.  They may be nervous and scared before big games and competitions, however they play it off cool.  Now, those athletes, even though they are scared, they don’t give off a vibe of insecurity.  The teammates, coaches and fans view them as secure and send them a feeling of security back.  Eventually the evidence of security in the environment adds up and the athletes start buying into the confidence they are portraying.  This is automatically changing their performance and psychology in a positive manner.  

So start creating awareness on your body language, focus and self-talk.  They all correlated and are important key factors in your performance because

Your thoughts become your words, your words become your actions, your actions become your habits, your habits become your character, and your character becomes your destiny.
