2018 Worlds: Rodrigues, Clay win blue belt open class titles on day 1; other results

The 2018 IBJJF World Jiu-Jitsu Championship kicked off this Thursday, May 31st, at the Long Beach Pyramid. It was the 12th edition of the event in Long Beach and the 23rd overall. Blue belts and white belts dominated the mats throughout the entire day. The highlight of the program was the adult blue belt open class divisions both for men and women.

In the male bracket, Atos Jiu-Jitsu domination. Matheus Rodrigues and Tainan Dalpra made their way to the big final for a close out. Rodrigues fought twice to reach the final, beating Fabrício Andrey and then outscoring Lucas Galvão 2-0 in the semifinal. On the other side of bracket, Tainan had three matches, beating Caio Perondi, Rafael Fernando and Gabriel Kutianski. In the close out, Matheus took the gold medal home.

In the female division, Elisabeth Clay had four matches to reach the top of the podium. After beating Lauren Adrienne, Claudia Pirvu and Madison Lucille, Clay met with Deise dos Santos in the final. After defending a triangle choke, Clay managed a guard pass and took Santos’ back to finish the match with a choke.
