2018 Worlds: Jimenez, Pessanha purple belt open class champions; Fechter wins brown belt open class division
Day 2 at the 2018 IBJJF World Jiu-Jitsu Championship was dedicated to the male and female purple belt divisions and the female brown belt divisions. The highlight of the day was the open class divisions at the end of the afternoon. Here’s how each bracket played out.
Male Purple Belt Open Class
Roberto Jimenez (Alliance) fought five times to reach the top of the podium. His two most difficult challenges were the semifinal and the final. In the semifinal, he came back from 0-9 deficit in the scoreboard after Pedro Alex passed his guard and got to mount. Jimenez was able to recover guard and find a lapel choke to finish Alex and secure his spot in the final. The opponent would be MMA fighter Mason Fowler, who made it to the final with a referees decision over Ronaldo Junior following a 4-4 tie.
The final was a short-lived affair, as Jimenez quickly captured Fowler’s back and immediately started to look for the finish. Mason fought bravely, but eventually Roberto found the lapels to finish with a bow and arrow choke.
Female Purple Belt Open Class
From Rio’s world famous community of Cidade de Deus, Gabrieli Pessanha left no stone unturned on her way to double gold this Friday. In the open class semifinal, she imposed her game on Barbara Katter to win with a large lead of 13-4. On the other side of the bracket, Janaina Maia managed a sweep and guard pass to outscore Gabrielli Shanti 5-3 and make her way to the gold medal match.
Two sweeps were the difference in the final, as Gabrieli managed two of them to outscore Janaina Maia and make her teammates and supporters go crazy on the stands.
Female Brown Belt Open Class
Gabriela Fechter fought five times to claim the gold medal. In the semifinal, she beat Mayssa Bastos 4-2 in a sweep battle. On the other side of the bracket, Larissa Carvalho got her spot in the final when Ane Svendsen was disqualified for turning to the wrong side while attacking Larissa’s foot.
The final was very short, as an injured Larissa could not offer any resistance to Gabriela’s attack to her ankle injured in the semifinal.
