The 2018 IBJJF World Jiu-Jitsu Championship wrapped up this Sunday at the Long Beach Pyramid. The black belt finals were the highlight of a thrilling day of Jiu-Jitsu.
In the open class division, Tayane Porfírio claimed her second gold medal in two years, once again beating Nathiely de Jesus in the final.
Meanwhile, a dislocated right shoulder during the superheavy final against Mahamed Aly put Leandro Lo out of commission and motivated one of the most selfless decisions by an athlete in the event’s 23-year history.
Marcus Buchecha, after winning the ultraheavy final in a fierce battle against João Gabriel Rocha, decided to yield to Lo in the closeout of the open class final. The crowd at the Pyramid gave both athletes a long standing ovation.
