2018 Pan: Lo, Luiza claim open class titles; all black belt champions crowned
The 2018 IBJJF Pan championship is in the books. Leandro Lo and Luiza Monteiro finished the 4-day marathon with the bragging rights as adult black belt open class champions. Lo also won the heavyweight division. Luiza closed out the middleweight division with teammate Angélica Galvão, taking home the silver medal. Here is how each weight class played out.
Roosterweight
With a 2-0 lead, Tomoyuki Hashimoto beat Koji Shibamoto to win the roosterweight division gold medal.
Lightfeather
In a sweep battle, João Miyao beat Pablo Mantovani 6-4 to claim the light-featherweight title.
Featherweight
In a thrilling match, Gianni Grippo beat Shane Hill 4-2 on advantages after a 2-2 tie on points to secure the featherweight gold medal.
Lightweight
Atos JJ teammates Michael Liera Jr. and JT Torres closed out the lightweight division with Torres taking the title.
Middleweight
One advantage was enough for Gabriel Arges to beat Marcos Tinoco in the middleweight final.
Medium-heavy
In another Atos JJ closeout, Lucas Barbosa took the medium-heavyweight gold medal against Gustavo Batista.
Heavyweight
Leandro Lo swept Tanner Rice once to win 2-0 and take the heavyweight title home.
Superheavy
Keenan Cornelius and Mahamed Aly put up a show in the Superheavy final. Keenan won by a narrow 1-0 lead on advantages to claim the gold medal.
Ultraheavy
In the ultraheavy division, João Gabriel Rocha caught Ricardo Evangelista with a armbar to take the gold medal home.
Open Class
One sweep at the end of the match granted Leandro Lo a 2-0 lead over Guttemberg Pereira to secure the open class division title.
Female Black belt
Lightfeather
In a heated and close match, Gezary Matuda beat Talita Alencar by referees decision after a 0-0 tie and claimed the light-featherweight gold medal.
Featherweight
In the featherweight final, Karen Antunes caught Jacqueline Amorim back to build a 4-0 lead and secure the title.
Lightweight
With a sweep to mount and then a back take, Bia Mesquita finished Jena Bishop with a choke to take home the gold medal in the lightweight division.
Middleweight
Angelica Galvão and Luiza Monteiro closed out the middleweight division with Angelica taking the gold medal.
Medium-heavy
Nathiely de Jesus outscored Carina Santi 8-6 in a match-long sweep exchange to win the medium-heavyweight title.
Heavyweight
With one sweep, Maria Malyjasiak beat Yacinta Nguyen 2-0 to take the heavyweight title home.
Superheavy
Claudia Do Val caught Hillary Vanornum with an omoplata to claim the Superheavy title.
Open Class
Luiza Monteiro is the open class champion after a closeout with Atos JJ teammate Bia Basilio.
